5th September 2019 Windsurfing: Bradfield Wind Direction: WNW Wind Stength: F2 - F4 Surf / Sea State: flat Air Temperature: warm Sea Temperature: warm Weather: Sunny Max Speed: 19.84 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 9.2 nm (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Nice sunny day at Bradfield with a 5pm tide, there was only 4 of use - 3 on foil and one fin. The wind was cross off but very gusty so it was going to be a difficult day. Andy M made the right choice getting there early at 2 because he was flying well at the Manningtree end. 2 rigged 7.x and I went for 8.5 / with new foil board Exocet RF91 on my old RRD foil. First thing I noticed was the huge platform to stand on, compared to the SB Ultrasonic 147. The back end is very wide with a nice lump in the middle to push on. If anyone wants to know whats differences I found between with a regular slalom board and a dedicated foil board, using the same foil here it is. 1. Very easy to push off downwind for the gust due to soft rails. The board just slides away. 2. The slalom board had to build up a lot of speed to fly. The Exocet bd went straight up to half mast without even pumping on very light gusts. Just a little tail kick made it fly in prob 8-10 ish knots. 3. During flight I didn't notice any real differences and I went over the top nearly as many times as the slalom board cos I breached the fin (riding too high) 4. The RF91 won on the bounce quite easily. When the nose dropped, yes the board didn't stick I just tapped my heel to get it up again, so the slam downs were not as violent as the slalom bd. In around 12kts the RF91 clocked 19.84 kts whilst the slalom board usually clocked 18kt ish. 5. The dedicated board was easier and I weren't so tired, however my flights were not impressive as I thought they would be. I am now certain I am using a foil that's not suited to my heavy body weight. The front wing has a narrow chord which makes it super sensitive, although it is quick. I need a easy freeride foil with a thicker front mast maybe even more than the 800cm width. This thing is holding me back. Andy had great flights up at the windy end and me and Swainey wallowed a bit with just a few flights. James made his way up to Manningtree end and did have a reasonable sail on his Bolt 135 |
